Falwell Calls Dixie Chicks 'French Hens'By The Associated Press JONESBORO, Ark. - The Rev. Jerry Falwell called the Dixie Chicks three "French hens," saying "politics should end at the shore when you leave the country," referring to antiwar remarks made by lead singer Natalie Maines. At a March 10 concert in London, Maines told the audience in reference to President Bush's push for military action against Iraq "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas." After Maines' remarks, radio stations began boycotting the Dixie Chicks, even though she publicly apologized for her statement. Maines and the Texas-based trio's other members — Emily Robison and Martie Maguire — told ABC's Diane Sawyer in a recent interview that the fallout was too harsh for the offense and that they've always supported U.S. troops even though they questioned the war. Falwell said Maines was wrong to speak critically of the United States while overseas. "You don't talk about your own country, especially during war," he said Monday during an appearance at Jonesboro. In 2001, Falwell apologized for saying God had allowed terrorists to attack America because of the work of civil liberties groups, abortion rights supporters and feminists. He said his comments were ill-timed, insensitive and divisive at a time of national mourning. "In the midst of the shock and mourning of a dark week for America, I made a statement that I should not have made and which I sincerely regret." On Monday, Falwell, a Baptist minister, characterized his statement as a clarification and "not so much as an apology." "But I don't sell records," he said. "And I don't do it in England and I don't do it in France. I do all of mine head to head, face to face in America as a taxpaying citizen." Dixie Chicks BiographyFormed: 1989The super vixens known as the Dixie Chicks have stomped new territory in the world of country music. The trio made up of Natalie Maines, Martie Seidel and Emily Robinson blend fiddle and banjo together to form their own unique sound. It all began in good ol' Dallas, Texas where Martie Erwin and her little sis Emily were encouraged by their ma to practice their stringed instruments. She even timed the practice sessions with an egg timer. It all paid off cuz the gals handled their instruments like pros and they were only in elementary school. In 1984 the sisters formed a bluegrass band called the Blue Night Express. The band performed around Texas for about five years until calling it quits when Martie was 19 and Emily 16. Months later the dynamite duo teamed up with some gal pals and began performing on the sidewalks in Dallas' business district. The Chicks were hatched in 1989, when they began calling themselves the Dixie Chicks - borrowing the name from a song by the blues band Little Feat. Besides street corners, they performed in small clubs and once in the produce department of a grocery store. Eventually their efforts paid off and they were opening for cowboys like Garth Brooks and playing the Grand Ole Opry - which is a huge deal in the world of country. In 1995, Natalie Maines took over as the lead singer in the group after their lead singer decided to leave. She quickly dug her spurs into the role and was a perfect fit for the group. This couldn't have been more obvious than on the gals' first major label release in 1998, Wide Open Spaces. It became the biggest selling album ever for a country duo or group. Yee ha! They lassoed two Grammys with Wide Open Spaces one for Best Country Album and the other for Best Country Vocal Performance By A Duo/Group. Although they're an established country act, they've won over main stream audiences of all ages with their 1999 CD Fly. Songs like Goodbye Earl appealed to a lot of people and the funny video starring Lauren Holly and Dennis Franz helped boost the group's popularity. In 2000, they took their Fly Tour on the road. But it wasn't all work and no play - Natalie took time out to tie-the-knot with her man, Adrian Pasdar in June of 2000. Things keep flyin' higher and higher for the gals so be sure to keep your eyes on this boot stompin' trio.
