"Enter The Matrix'' Goes Gold; Groundbreaking Crossover Between Hollywood
and Video Games Is Complete; Available Worldwide On
May 15
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--April 18, 2003--Atari and Shiny Entertainment
are pleased to announce that development is complete on "Enter The
Matrix" for the PlayStation® 2 computer entertainment system, the Xbox™
video game system from Microsoft, the Nintendo GameCube™ and the personal
computer. The worldwide launch of the game to retail outlets will occur on
schedule on May 15, 2003, day and date with the theatrical release of the
highly anticipated Warner Brothers action movie "The Matrix
Reloaded."
"Over two years ago, Joel Silver, the producer of 'The Matrix' trilogy,
and the Wachowski brothers, the writers and directors, envisioned a new way
that Hollywood and the video-game industry could work together. Their concept
required Shiny to build a video game containing every single element of the
Matrix experience, and it was essential that this groundbreaking game be
delivered on time with their movie, so Matrix fans could experience it all at
once," said David Perry, President of Shiny Entertainment, the game's
developer. "Today, those objectives have been met, and soon gamers around
the world will enjoy the results of this unprecedented collaboration, gaining
a unique insight into the Matrix universe."
"Enter The Matrix" is a revolution in interactive entertainment -- a
third-person action game that effectively blurs the line between Hollywood
blockbuster films and next-generation video games. The game is directed and
features a script written by the Wachowski brothers, writers/directors of
"The Matrix" film trilogy, creating the most intensive collaboration
between a video-game publisher and a movie studio to date. More information

ENTER THE MATRIX Launch Event
We keep hearing here at Shiny through our focus testing that Matrix fans can't
wait to see the new films. It's no surprise then that those same Matrix fans
couldn't wait to hear more about Enter The Matrix. After months and months of
hearing from the fans and the gaming public that we needed - NEEDED - to
release some information about the game, the time finally arrived on February
4th at the Warner Brothers back lot.
Now, this wasn't your average premiere party for a game. Jada Pinkett Smith,
who plays Niobe, confirmed that she'd be there as did Anthony Wong and Lachy
Hulme, who play Ghost and Sparks in the game. It seemed like every
single member of the gaming press reserved spots right away and they were
joined by the mainstream press - CNN, USA Today, MTV - that also showed up
with cameras blazing and video rolling. The turnout was amazing for a
video game launch event.
The Shiny development team was invited not only to enjoy the festivities, but
also to demo the game for everyone in attendance. We all knew it was going to
be a big night, but it all came into crystal clear focus when we boarded a bus
headed for the Warner Brothers back lot.
Security was tight. Wristbands were required to enter the event, as were
super-cool, glossy black invitations. We found shortly before the event that
those invitations were a premium item - the requests just flowed in, and we
were surprised when we realized we had such a hot ticket. The event grew so
much larger than anticipated - more than 800 people invited - that we
unfortunately had to turn down many requests.
The event itself started off with a red carpet entrance, or should we say
"Black Carpet" entrance in keeping with the evenings Matrix theme,
for VIPs and celebrity guests, who headed for the Stephen J. Ross theatre on
the Warner Brothers back lot. Just like a Hollywood premiere, the black carpet
was lined with press and paparazzi. The Shiny team are normally used to the
gaming press crowding around at E3, but here the guys from GameSpy, IGN and
Gamespot were rubbing shoulders with E!, Entertainment Tonight and Access
Hollywood. Yeah, this was the real deal, all right - a true Hollywood premiere
event held in honor of the game!
The guests streamed down the black carpet. "Our" stars -- Jada,
Anthony and Lachy - were joined by Keanu Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss and Laurence
Fishburne. Along with the Matrix cast, other A-list guests rolled in. Will
Smith, Tobey Maguire, Tommy Lee, and Mira Sorvino. Hugh Hefner showed up with
six Playmates in tow. Paul Oakenfold and Marilyn Manson were guest DJs for the
event, and Manson showed up with his own unique crew. The guest list was very
impressive.
Inside the theatre, Matrix producer Joel Silver took the stage, and introduced
a very special feature, the world premiere of The Animatrix anime "The
Final Flight of the Osiris," which is actually the prequel to the game.
This particular portion of The Animatrix isn't due to be released until March,
and as the show started, the theatre went silent. By the end, everyone was
just stunned. Not only had the Wachowski brothers and Square created an anime
true to the Matrix universe, but it is truly one of the finest pieces of
computer-generated animation ever created. Think I'm overhyping it?
You'll see for yourself next month! As Trinity says in the latest Reloaded
movie trailer, "Believe it!"
Next, Joel introduced the premiere of the "Enter The Matrix" game
trailer. Again, the theatre went dark, and again the audience came out the
other end just wowed by what they had seen. Sure, we're all proud of the game,
but what is really special is what the Wachowski brothers and Joel were able
to pull off for the production quality of our trailer. The two-minute trailer,
which we hope to release to the public soon, was directed by the Brothers and
produced by the same company that cut the "The Matrix Reloaded"
Super Bowl trailer. Yet another example of how the Wachowskis are shattering
the norm of videogame production quality by demanding and delivering a
ground-breaking level of quality to the gaming public.
With the presentations complete, the guests moved into Stage 19 on the lot,
where the fun really began.
Along with having an ultra-chill party environment designed by Hollywood event
planner Colin Cowie, the crowd was treated to fully stocked bars, incredible
food, live DJs, and best of all, "Enter The Matrix."
Forty-eight screens were available for guests to play the game across all four
platforms -- PlayStation 2, Gamecube, Xbox and PC. For the Shiny team, it was
a bit like sending our baby out into the world. After so much secret
development, strict security and hard work, the game was standing on its own
two feet. Everyone at the event took a shot at playing the game -- Laurence
Fishburne zeroed in on the PC version, while Jada and her children test-drove
the PS2 version. Countless others took turns with the Gamecube and the
Xbox.
For Shiny, it's been a labor of love. We're extremely proud of what we've
achieved with the game, crafting the Wachowski brother's vision over these
past couple of years from the ground up, our only hope being that people
simply get a really fun gameplay experience.
We were pleased to find that the gaming press, retailers and special guests
really enjoyed playing the game. We think we've created a very balanced game
that offers something for everyone. The hardcore gamers seemed to have
lots of fun playing and appreciated the depth of the controls. The casual
gamers at the event enjoyed it as well, finding the controls to be intuitive
and accessible. There's something really nice about seeing one of the editors
playing the game with a smile on his face, while one kiosk away a woman in her
mid-fifties was calling her husband over excitedly to watch her kick some ass.
In the end, the event went off without a hitch. In the past few days, we've
seen great coverage of the game on the major gaming sites as well as on
television news and entertainment shows.
For those that have read about the game on your favorite Web site, we hope
that you've gotten a good taste for what's in store for you. Keep checking the
official game site for the most up to date information on the game.
The day after the event, we were back at work at Shiny, putting final polish
and tweaks into the game, and continuing to squash all the bugs the quality
assurance teams find.
We're going to keep working hard on the game, making sure we here at Shiny
have a game that we all enjoy playing, making sure that on May 15, you'll have
one, too.
